Name Buchu
Botanical Classification Agathosma betulina
Constituents Limonene, isomenthone, diosphenol (Barosma camphor), terpinen-4-ol and minor sulfur containing compounds such as 8- mercpacto-p-methane-3-one.
Properties Stimulant, diuretic, antiseptic, cleansing, detox
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
Urinary tract infections, high blood pressure, prostate problems, water retention, menstrual bloating, symptomatic relief from rheumatism, congestive heart failure.
External Uses For sprains and bruises steep in vinegar and apply to affected area.
Preparation Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of herb. Cover and steep for 5-10 min. May be consumed 3 times per day. Stay within the dosage.
The oil extracted from Buchu should not be used in aromatherapy as it is considered toxic because of its high pulegone content.
Safety and Precaution When using Buchu as a diuretic it must be noted that can deplete the body’s store of potassium. When taking Buchu, you should increase your consumption of foods rich in potassium, such as bananas, various dark green vegetables, whole grains and fish. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take therapeutic amounts of Buchu and the herb should also not be given to young children. Should not be used in patients with a history of kidney disease. If unsure consult a health practitioner before use.
