Constituents Flavonoids including rutin, isoquercitrine and kampherol, hydrocyanic glycoside sambunigrine, tannins, anthocyanins, chlorogenic acids, essential oil, essential vitamins, minerals.
Properties Antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, astringent, antimicrobial, anti-cancer, antibacterial, diuretic, laxative, diaphoretic, anti-catarrhal (helps body remove excess mucous).
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
Colds, influenza, bronchitis, rhinosinusitis, also used to sweat out a fever. Cleansing mucous from the tissues. Headaches due to colds. Inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, such as hay fever and sinusitis. Rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, scrofula, gout, syphilis, epilepsy, diabetes and chronic disease. Catarrhal deafness (build-up of mucus in external auditory canal).
Beneficial for purifying the blood, kidneys, liver and skin. (Take the tea every morning before breakfast for some weeks).
Stimulates peristaltic action in the colon
Helps as mild laxative.
External Uses As a gargle for sore throats. Use as a herbal hot press for sore, inflamed eyes and skin irritations.
For haemorrhoids.
Other For animals: treatment of gastric problems, liver ailments, jaundice, fevers, skin ailments, wounds, kidney problems, water retention, coughs, flu, breathing problems, ring worms, scabies, mange and parasites.
Preparation Infusion: Pour 1 cup of boiling water onto 2 teaspoons of flowers. Cover and infuse for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink hot 3 times a day.
Hot compress: Put 1-2 teaspoons of flowers into a facecloth, wrap and dip into ½ a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Allow to cool enough not to burn the skin, squeeze excess water from the facecloth and apply to affected area.
