Constituents Volatile oil, which comprises mainly the sesquiterpenes patchoulol (35%) and bulnesene. Terpenoids, phytosterols, flavonoids, organic acids, lignins, alkaloids, glycosides.
Properties Antioxidant, antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, antithrombotic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, antimutagenic, antiemetic, fibrinolytic and cytotoxic activities, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, nervine, febrifuge, insecticide and tonic. Stimulates blood circulation.
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
Patchouli has been used in ancient Chinese medicine to treat headaches, colds, nausea, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, depression, stress, anxiety, appetite control, gastrointestinal issues, constipation. Immune system booster.
External Uses For treatment of inflamed and itchy skin, dermatitis, acne, dry and cracked skin, ulcers, torn skin, abrasions and pressure sores. Can be used on facial skin as a toner. For oily hair and dandruff.
Other Use in perfumes, fragrances, incense, candles and soaps. Essential oil can be used as an insect repellent. Aromatherapy.
Dosage Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of herb. Cover and infuse for 10-15 mins. Strain and drink 2-3 times per day.
Hot compress: Put 1-2 teaspoons of herb into a facecloth, wrap and dip into ½ a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Allow to cool enough not to burn the skin, squeeze excess water from the facecloth and apply to affected area.
