Botanical Classification Urtica dioica
Constituents Histamine, formic acid, chlorophyll, glucoquinine, iron, vitamin C, flavonoids, silicic acid, minerals, flavonol glycosides, phenolic acids, scopoletin, b-sitosterol, tannins. Roots contain polysaccharides, UDA lectin, phenolics, sterols and their glycosides.
Properties Detoxify, haemostatic, diuretic, astringent, tonic, anti-inflammatory, anti-catarrhal
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
Gout, eczema (child wood and nervous), arthritis, poor kidney function, fluid retention, hay fever, asthma, allergic reactions, anaemia, sciatica, internal haemorrhage, jaundice, infertility, dysentery, benign prostatic hyperplasia, enlarged and painful prostate, heavy menstrual bleeding, haemorrhoids, rheumatism, UTI. Reduces mucus in the lungs and bronchial catarrh. Improves breastmilk production.
Cleanses and detoxifies the body.
Supports and strengthens the whole body, especially after winter and for general health tonic.
External Uses As a hot press can be used for minor burns, insect bites, arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica and neuralgia. Excellent for general hair and skin health infused in a hot bath, improves hair texture and colour, prevents hair loss, encourages new growth, clears dandruff and oily hair.
Other For animals: tonic, anaemia, poor appetite, worms, lung issues, allergies, weakness, dull hair/hair loss.
Preparation Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-3 teaspoons of herb. Cover and infuse for 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 times per day.
Hot compress: Put 1-2 teaspoons of herb into a facecloth, wrap and dip into ½ a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Allow to cool enough not to burn the skin, squeeze excess water from the facecloth and apply to affected area.

Precaution Raw/fresh leaves are highly irritant. Stay within the recommended dosages. Occasional side effects may include mild stomach upset. Do not use when pregnant or breastfeeding. Not for use for individuals with heart failure or serious kidney disease.
